THE SUPREME PONTIFF
P.P. LEONEM XIV
On May 8, 2025, Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, O.S.A., was elected as Pope Leo XIV, becoming the first U.S.-born pontiff in the history of the Catholic Church. His election marks a continuation of the Church's commitment to social justice and pastoral outreach, reflecting his deep roots in the Augustinian order and extensive missionary work in Peru.

Augustinian Heritage and Missionary Work in Peru
Born in Chicago in 1955, Pope Leo XIV entered the Order of Saint Augustine, dedicating his life to the teachings of St. Augustine. He served as the Prior General of the Augustinian order from 2001 to 2013, leading the community with a focus on unity and spiritual depth.
His missionary journey led him to Peru, where he spent over two decades serving the faithful. In 2015, he was appointed Bishop of Chiclayo, a role he held until 2023. During his tenure, he was known for his pastoral care, dedication to education, and commitment to the poor. He also served as the Apostolic Administrator of the Diocese of Callao and was a member of the Peruvian Episcopal Conference, contributing to the cultural and educational development of the Church in Peru.

Papal Coat of Arms: Symbols of Unity and Faith
Pope Leo XIV's coat of arms reflects his Augustinian spirituality and his vision for the Church. The shield is divided diagonally:
Upper Section: A blue background featuring a white lily, symbolizing the Virgin Mary's purity and the Pope's devotion to her.
Lower Section: A red heart pierced by an arrow resting on a closed book, inspired by St. Augustine's writings, representing the transformative power of God's word.
The coat of arms is accompanied by his episcopal motto, "In Illo Uno Unum" ("In the One, we are one"), emphasizing unity in Christ.
A Pontificate Guided by Compassion and Dialogue
Pope Leo XIV's early messages as pontiff highlight his commitment to peace, unity, and the Church's missionary role. In his first address, he emphasized the importance of being a Church that builds bridges and is open to all, especially the marginalized.
He has also identified contemporary challenges, such as the ethical implications of artificial intelligence, calling for thoughtful engagement with modern issues while upholding the Church's teachings.
Pope Leo XIV's election brings a shepherd with a heart for mission, a mind rooted in Augustinian thought, and a vision for a unified Church addressing the needs of today's world.
